25 Dec 2024 3:48 PM | Jorge Luis Bernal

Monochrome painting is art composed in a single color and commonly utilizing various shades or tints. Put simply, art in black and white omits the 'distraction' of color and brings out the essential shape and form of the objects depicted.

Description: This 2 Day Workshop offers the opportunity to learn and or re-fine the Cold Wax/Oil, basics techniques, but the main-focus will be on abstract monochrome painting. The goal is for each participant to explore new shapes, ideas and inspiration through a limited Palette.

On the first day we cover the basics:  Mark-making for structure and expression, color mixing, substrate preparation, tools and paint applications,  the foundational layers, texture, collage significance and placement, the stages of dryness, working wet-in-wet, mechanical and solvent reductions and finally the best practices for finishing your work.

The second day centers on black and white painting. We discuss  why elements such as composition, value, lighting and form become more important. The mark-making is improved by enabling the discovery of different forms and shapes with subtle tones. The images become incredibly evocative and most importantly what you lose in not using color you’ll gain in quality of composition and contrast. Color is no longer a distraction the focus is on the overall composition.

Workshop Requirements:

Class size maximum of five (5) people and three (3) Min.
